Women invite UN Special Rep to Colombo Ms. Hina Jilani, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General of Human Rights Defenders will visit Colombo at the invitation of The women and Media Collective and The Law and Society Trust in May. She is an advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and a human rights activist whose mission is defending the rights of women, minorities and children through activist and legal strategies. She is currently the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General of Human Rights Defenders. Miss Jilani founded the first women's law firm in Pakistan in 1980, where a significant number of cases concern the violation of women's right to security of person, liberty and equality. She also founded Pakistan's first legal aid centre in 1986 AGHS Legal Aid Celi. During her visit, Ms. Jilani will launch the following publications on May 2nd at 4.00 p.m. at the BMICH Committee Room F. 1. The Role of Gender Sensitive International Justice in the Domestic Legislative Framework: The relevancy of the seemingly irrelevant. 2. Disappearances in Sri Lanka and the available legal remedies 3. A Handbook on the evolution of Sexual Definitions She will also act as resource person at a workshop on Prosecuting Sexual Offences, conducted by the Women and Media Collective. |
