President - NAR soldiers meeting put off

The meeting between ex-National Auxiliary Reserve (NAR) soldiers and President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for Friday, April 25 to resolve the compensation has been postponed to April 30.

The Ex-NAR soldiers who went on a fast-unto-death campaign gave up the fast just before the Sinhala and Hindu New year, following assurance from PA Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera, that the President would meet them on April 25 and review the matter. The soldiers had demanded Rs. one million each as compensation. -RK

JVP-PA union talks on final lap

Talks to finalise the Joint Alliance between the People's Alliance and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna will be concluded soon and the Memorandum of Understanding would be prepared by mid May, a JVP high ranking politburo member confirmed. He also said that they had fully overcome the initial difficulties they had on major policies for the defence of the country and the security of the people. -DPL

Relief measures still active

The process of providing relief and rehabilitation assistance to displaced families in the LTTE-controlled areas of the North are actively in force, Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Refugees, Minister Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena said. Last week a cheque for Rs. 5 million was handed over to the Kilinochchi GA for disbursement as relief assistance among displaced families, he said.

ALFEA severs connection with SLBFE

The Association of Licensed Foreign Employment Agency (ALFEA) which has been registered under the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has unofficially cancelled its annual registration with the SLBFE.

Chairman SLBFE, Susantha Fernando said that ALFEA had extended function in contravention of the special Gazette notification No. 521/21 in 1988-08-31, although the time period for registration was to be renewed after April 5, 2003. The SLBFE says that it has no official dealings with the ALFEA as official registration with the SLBFE had been ignored, but certifies that the SLBFE will provide all licensed agencies the required services.

According to SLBFE Chairman, the SLBFE will take steps to hold official registration immediately. The SLBFE urges all agencies not to panic under present circumstances affecting them.

Program officer pockets Rs5.8 m

A computer programing officer of the Housing and Plantations Ministry has been taken into custody following the detection of a massive fraud from the ministry funds, CID sources told the Sunday Observer. The suspect having forged some documents had drawn state funds amounting to Rs. 5.8 million from the Treasury which he had deposited at a state bank in Borella.

The Asian Development Bank had loaned the money to the Sri Lanka government to be utilised in a low housing scheme project for the underprivileged. The suspect had later drawn some money from the bank and purchased two vehicles and also made a trip to Singapore with his wife this year. Meanwhile CID sleuths also recovered Rs. 2.7 million from the suspect.

CID sources said that the suspect was entrusted handling documentation with regard to housing loans from the Treasury. -JJ

ANCL to help in Army Avurudu celebrations

The Sri Lanka Army's 56th division in Omanthai will be holding its Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations with the assistance of Lake House and other well-wishers today, April 27.

General Officer Commanding the 56th division, Brigadier U. B. L. Fernando said that the event was organised for the welfare and uplift of the morale of the soldiers and to maintain cultural traditions.

Soldiers serving in the area will get an opportunity to enjoy our traditions and build up public relations", he said.

More than 50 events including the traditional Avurudu Kumari, Sangavunu Amutta and bicycle races have been organised and there will be over 1,000 prizes distributed among winners. Both civilians and military personnel are invited to participate in the event.

ANCL papers the Silumina, Dinamina and Tharuni will provide media coverage for the main events. All participants have to buy a Lake House publication at the entrance on which there will be a draw, with the winner receiving an attractive prize. Security Forces Commander Major General M. D. S. Chandrapala will be the Chief Guest.

Lady doctor needs help

Dr. Thanusha Dhanapala (29), an old girl of Girls' High School, Kandy, presently attached to the Anaesthetic Department, Kegalle Base Hospital is suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. She is now admitted to the Apollo Speciality Hospital in Chennai, India for treatment. The estimated cost is around Rs. 500,000 (Sri Lankan rupees). Her mother requests the willing donors to assist her daughter's cause by contributing to A/c No. 10043 1142257, Union Place branch, Bank of Ceylon.

Malanie Gunaratne of Katubedda, Moratuwa is suffering from severe tripple vessel disease. Consultant Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Y.K.M. Lahie has advised a bypass operation early to save her life. The generous public could remit to A/C No: 207-014032-9 of People's Bank Katubedda branch, Moratuwa.

Supun Jayatilake of 57/2, Watuliyadda, Medamahanuwara, aged 1 year and 8 months is suffering from Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Dr. Y. K. M. Lahie of Nawaloka Hospital has recommended early heart surgery, which cost Rs. 208,000 (Rs. two hundred and eight thousand). The child's parents have no proper jobs or income and are unable to find this money, and seek the assistance of the public. Contributions could be made to Kandy Bank of Ceylon, Super Grade Branch A/c No. 100026137688.

Lady doctor's appeal

Ayur. Dr. Mrs. Mangalika Sunetha Warnakulasuriya, a mother of three school-going children suffering from kidney failure and Prof. Rizvi Sheriff of the Colombo National Hospital has recommended a kidney transplant to save her life.

Ayur. Dr. Warnakulasuriya appeals to a generous donor of either sex of the B Positive or O Positive blood groups, to donate a kidney to contact her on 01-916150 or 0777-295032.

The cost of the transplant and subsequent medication is estimated to be around Rs. 1,000,000 and since she is not able to afford it appeals to the public for financial support. Contributions can be sent to A/C No. 01-0067-02-3974-7 of the People's Bank, Kiribathgoda.
