Ceasefire will hold : G.L. vetoes road blocks

by Elmo Leonard

There is no necessity to establish road blocks in Colombo or any other part of Sri Lanka; the ceasefire agreement entered into on February 22 by Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe and LTTE leader, Prabhakaran will stand, assured government's chief negotiator, Professor G. L. Peiris, on Friday.

Today's situation of the Tamil Tigers refusing to participate in the forthcoming peace talks is completely different to the cancellation of the previous ceasefire by the LTTE in April 1995, he said pointing out that with the invalidation of that ceasefire, the LTTE had attacked two Sri Lanka ships in the Tricomalee harbour.

Sri Lanka is in for good times; oil and wheat prices were coming down, while export commodities, tea and rubber are witnessing rising prices, Prof Peiris said at the `Lanka Star 2003' awards presentation.

Having met with the members of American Chamber of Commerce, in Washington, recently, Prof. Peiris said he found an unprecedented number of American companies keen to invest in Sri Lanka.

A free trade agreement with the United States and Sri Lanka is in the offing, he said explaining that this would enable Sri Lanka made apparel to enter America, following the annulment of the Multi Fibre Agreement in 2005. The Americans he said had also shown interest in Sri Lanka's footwear and leather industries.

The Government has set up a tariff commission, and tariffs would be altered to suit Sri Lanka interests, in trade with India and Pakistan, Prof Peiris said.
