SLT support to develop English language skills Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) sponsors the Impromptu English Debating Competition organised by the English Literary Association of D.S. Senanayake College (DSSC) to mark the 21st year of its existence. This series of debating competitions consists of three components: the D.S. Impromptu Debating Competition, the SLT Prepared English Debating Competition and Inter-house English Debating Competition. Thirty-two teams from 21 schools from different parts of the island will take part in the D.S. Impromptu Debating Competition. The SLT Prepared English Debating Competition is for the eight best teams of the D.S. Impromptu Debating Competition.The Inter-house English Debating Competition is organised for the young debaters of DSSC. The finals of all three competitions will be held on May 31 at the BMICH. All debates are adjudicated by appraised professional lawyers, law students and outstanding past debaters of DSSC. This series of competitions is one of the best organised and most technologically advanced debating competitions in the island. It uses over 10 computers for all pre-planning, organising and the running of the activities of the competitions; a network system connecting all computers was in place to feed information to the participants simultaneously; the English Literary Association provided free phone lines and free Internet access to do their preparations; and a computer each, placed in all the preparation rooms, with free Internet access, provided information sources such as Encarta and Britannica for the debaters quickly and efficiently. |
