'Literally on my toes'

A successful music and spoken word presenter on TV, compere Kumar de Silva is seen in the picture with his co-compere Neidra Williams when he threaded together the Golden Clef Awards 2002 show extravaganza in March this year.

A winner of the Golden Clef Awards, Music Presenter of the Year - TV in 1994 Kumar comments that he was privileged to be the compere that night for Sunday Observer and "I enjoyed myself working with Neidra who was half a centimetre taller than I (because of her heels) and I had to always remember to be literally on my toes throughout the show!" On a more serious note he congratulates the Sunday Observer for reviving the Awards after a long lapse "because there is a whole new generation out there who need to be recognised for their talent and who need this incentive to spur them on to reach better heights for themselves in the future years.

The Western Music industry is in dire need of more new input and it was good to see young new groups like Damage, Krebs Cycle and young singers Nevanthi Pieres and Asanthi de Alwis carry off awards. Which means they are assured of a good future provided they work hard towards achieving it. I hope the categories will increase in the coming years to represent specialised areas in the music scene in our country."

Kumar's career in compering launched off with the popular Fan Club telecast weekly on ITN, reading news, as well as compiling the interesting magazine programme Bonsoir which he initially presented and produced for Alliance Francaise with Yasmin Rajapakse. After more than ten years behind the camera for Fan Club, Kumar has moved out of that presentation, but still continues with Bonsoir now telecast on Channel Eye.

A much sought after compere for dances, corporate and private functions, Kumar now along with his wife Tharindu navigates his own creative media and communication consultancy called Adahas which keeps him centre stage.
