Unparalleled in his music

Despite all the hip-hop, rap, garage and funk that has become part of our musical lives the music of the early 40s, 50s, 60s, will always remain as a firm base on which to build ones career in music. Ask any discerning and accomplished musician, and his answer will be in the affirmative.

Veteran musician - pianist/saxophonist and a multi-instrumentalist who expressed the music of the early years with elegance and distinction was none other than Miki Menezes who sadly left behind a legacy of his creative artistry (for us as memories) three years ago on May 15.

A teacher of music as well, Miki was renowned for his unparalleled performances on piano, saxophone, clarinet, trombone, cello and acoustic bass. Formally trained in classical music, his dexerity in playing the gamut of popular music like the standards, show tunes, with no music sheet in front of him was amazing.

A member of his father's band the Papa Menezes Swing Stars and later leader of his own popular dance band The Miki Menezes Combo- Miki's valuable contribution to the music industry in his lifetime is today treasured mostly by all his students who came under his tutelage and are now reaping the benefits not only in Sri Lanka but also abroad mostly in Australia and London.

Today his son Roger carries on the family tradition leading his popular and successful band Stay Tuned in Sydney. Miki's wife Cynthia - a musician herself, a drummer in the early years - keeps alive Miki's business of piano tuning and hiring. A friend to all musicians - young or old - Miki was ever ready to drop whatever he was doing to help a musician out in a gig always advocating the maxim that musicians must stand together in strength.
