by LAKMAL WELABADA 'Something out of anything' is his concept. Asoka Nanayakkara is full of artistic skills with unusual imagination for an 'unusual craft'... Nuts, bolts and wrenches of a car or a three wheeler, and a skeleton of an old umbrella have been half of his world, though he is devoted to his family. He is an Accountant by profession. The boring and tasteless metal parts are the most welcoming items in his unusual hobby. When I first interviewed him in 1996, Asoka had invented Vintage cars. In 1999, he came out with the `history of bicycles'. And today, he is with 'unusual ornamental crafts'... Everything is done out of waste material and used body parts of vehicles. All the creations are miniature and toy-sized items. Though normally artists and craftsmen are found in places with blooms and greenery, this man could be seen loafing around the dusty streets of 'Slave Island' peeping into the small motor stores collecting waste parts of vehicles. " Except the little dirt collected when cleaning there's nothing to be thrown away at our place. Asoka sees some beauty in every piece of solid waste material," says Asoka's wife with a smile. Asoka has done eight TV programs, and had taken part in the 'Techno '98' motor exhibition conducted by the Automobile Engineering Institute sharing his uncommon experience. "What is next in line?," I asked. "The history of boats," he said showing me a few pieces of metal beside him. The man with an uncommon interest hopes to exhibit his unusual ornamental crafts in the near future to raise funds for charity work. |
