Nambiar right to focus on military concerns - Harry Goonatilake

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

Commenting on General Nambiar's report, former Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Harry Goonatilake said "Gen Nambiar is trying to find the middle ground for both the military and the LTTE which both sides will find difficult to implement. He is trying to say that both sides must come down, but whether both parties will like to reduce their cadres, weapons or lands is questionable unless it comes through a peace package."

"Secondly, he has very rightly concentrated on security concerns of the military, but equal concern has not been given to the rights of the native people who have been living in those areas for many years.

They have a right to go and live there to cultivate and have a peaceful life as there is no war now. HSZ is a vast area, about 50 Sq km from the east of Point Pedro to beyond KKS upto Telippalai.

As for Gen. Nambiar's remarks on the SLMM performances, Gen. Nmbiar has mentioned a very valid point in saying that the SLMM should have more people, additional responsibilities and more authority to work. As it is the SLMM is trying to make both the LTTE and the Government happy.

This is something that I too observed during the Kayts incident.

"There is no harm in inviting General Nambiar to submit a report on the HSZ if the government feels that serving officers are biassed. But it would have been better if the Government had got the assistance of retired flag rank officers to assist General Nambiar because they are all aware of what happened from the beginning.
