Mignonne presents her 'Celebration of Life' tomorrow

Synonymous with music in Sri Lanka, composer, arranger. keyboardist, singer and leader of the highly acclaimed pop and dance band The Jetliners, Mignonne Fernando will launch her first CD "A Celebration of Life" at the Galadari Hotel tomorrow, Monday.

Leader of the Jetliners for a period of 37 years, the CD contains fifteen tracks of English and Sinhala songs which reflect her career over the years. Way back in 1963 Mignonne Fernando burst on to the showbiz scene in Sri Lanka in an era when the guitar music of 'The Shadows' were top hits in the global charts and 'pop' was becoming a force in music.

She soon became the 'toast' of Colombo leading the Jetliners at the many sold-out Saturday nights at the Coconut Grove, Galle Face Hotel. From this point onwards her career escalated and the Jetliners were eagerly sought out for performances abroad - in Bombay, Waikiki and then an unbroken contract of seventeen years at The Regent, Hong Kong which, according to Mignonne was a highprint in her career. Her popularity as a keyboardist, arranger/composer resulted in her artistry being sought after for the many presentations at The Regent for leading global fashion houses and jewellery designers.

She is the only artiste so far in the history of the World Popular Song Festival organised by the Yamaha Foundation for Music Education in Tokyo, to have been selected for three consecutive years.

Where she came up against such international stars as Tony Christie, Neil Reid and ABBA. With many international credits behind her, Mignonne became a member of the American Guild of Variety Artistes will, as she says, continue with her composing and endeavour to put Sri Lanka on the musical map.

To quote her "despite having travelled far and wide for the several years that I have been involved in music, I haven't changed at all. I will always be Sri Lankan at heart and through my music tell the world about our Paradise Island".
