Sri Lanka Army, Navy and Walalla MMV impress at National Relay C'ships

Sri Lanka Army women athletes established two new Sri Lanka records in the 4 x 800 metres relay and the Medley Relay on day two of the three-day 3rd National Relay Championships conducted by the AAA and held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

In the 4 x 800 metres relay, Army women quartet comprising Mangala Priyadarshani Ramani Subasinghe, Niluka Rajapakse and Niluka de Silva 'clocked' 8.59.1 secs to set the first Sri Lanka record. The earlier record was held by Sri Lanka Air Force 9.25.6 secs in 2001.

Sri Lanka Navy who came second also improved on the record 9.05.4 secs and Sri Lanka Air Force third 9.33.3 secs.

Sri Lanka Army women won the medley relay with a new time of 3.42.3 secs. Track Masters held the previous record 3.45.1 secs. Mangala Priyadarshani, Menaka Wickremasinghe, Dinusha Seneviratne and S. V. Kusumawathie represented the Army women's Medley Relay team.

Sri Lanka Air Force 'A' took second position 3.44.0 secs and Sri Lanka Navy in third place 3.51.0 secs. Sri Lanka Navy's men set new meet records in the 4 x 800 metres relay and the Medley Relay.

'Sailors' timed 7.34.2 secs to win the event and erased off the mark of Sri Lanka Army 7.38.9 secs in 2001.

The medley relay time was 3.09.3 secs and they erased off their own previous time 3.11.7 secs in 2001.

Sri Lanka Army men's 'A' team set the other record in the 4 x 100 metres relay clocking a time of 40.9 secs. Sri Lanka Army held the past record of 41.0 secs. A. Ratnayake MMV 4 records

A. Ratnayake MMV, Walalla put up an impressive performances establishing four new meet records.

They set up records in the Medley Relay Girls under-18 - 4.03.7 secs, Medley Relay Boys under-16 - 3.37.2 secs, Medley Relay Boys under-20 - 3.20.1 secs and in the 4 x 200 metres Boys under-20 relay 1.30.7 secs.

D. C. A. Dahanayake of Sri Lanka Air Force was leading in the Heptathlon Championship, collecting 2058 points after four events - 100 metres hurdles, high jump, shot putt and 200 metres.

P. Jayasubashani of Trincomalee District AAA was in second place with 1772 points, A. P. Nilanthi of Sri Lanka Navy third with 1642 points and E. M. Soyza (Unattached) fourth with 1632 points.

The meet will be continued today from 1.00 p.m.
