DSI sponsored schools VB in three age groups

Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation in association with the Sports Division of Ministry of Education will conduct the 5th DSI Super Sports Schools Volleyball Championships in three age groups for boys and girls. Earlier it was for boys and girls under-18 and under-17 but this year under-14 boys and girls event have also been included. The championships are sponsored by DSI Samson Group.

Mervyn J. Cooray, the President of the Volleyball Federation of Sri Lanka and a former Member of the Parliament, at a press conference held on Thursday night at the Sugathadasa Stadium Sports Hotel said that at the request of the sponsors, they had decided to add one more event under-14 tournament for both boys and girls to find the hidden talent from other districts.

The preliminary round matches will be played on district level (25 districts). The two best teams in each age category will join the other teams to play at national level at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

The district level matches will be played on June 21, 22, 28 and 29. The schools and international schools recognised by the Ministry of Education can participate. "Our main aim is to develop the game of volleyball, the national game in Sri Lanka, and also reach great heights and come on par with other sports like cricket and athletics. The SLVF also have decided to appoint district volleyball coaches on the advice of the Ministry of Sports," said Mr. Cooray and thanked the sponsors DSI for coming forward to sponsor the championships for the fifth successive year.

Rohan Somawansa, Marketing Manager, DSI Samson Group said that they were happy of the progress of the schools volleyball championships. As local establishment DSI idea is not gain popularity and publicity for the company but to promote volleyball in a big way. Any sport has to be started from the young and Mr. Somawansa said more schools will take part in these championships this year.

The final round matches will be played on June 25 and 26 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. The best players in each age group will be selected and special prizes will be awarded.

The finals will be played on August 1 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium and they will be telecast live.

The champions and runners-up in all three age groups (boys and girls) will receive cash awards.

Entry forms could be had from the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation or Sports Division of Ministry of Education and entries should be forwarded on or before May 26 to Secretary, Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, 2, Reid Avenue, Colombo 7. (L.F.)
