Await McFoil Challenge 2003 Round 2 May 31

The quiet suburb of Pannala will once again roar to the sound of revving engines and screeching tyres as the Ceylon Motor Sports Club and the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club join hands in conducting Round 2 of the McFoil Challenge 2003. The event will be held as scheduled on May 31 and June 1, following the successful completion of Round 1 in February.

As was the case for Round 1, the race will include events for motor cycles and for motor cars. Entries for the event are now open at the CMSC office, with entries for cars closing on May 22.

The motor racing fraternity has enjoyed a couple of weeks respite after the hectic racing schedule over the April season and competitors would no doubt have used this time to give themselves and their mechanics as well earned rest.

In the motor car category, it is expected that Round 2 will see the Sri Lankan debut of the Mitsubishi Eve 8 in the very capable hands of Dinesh Deheragoda. Dinesh had, up to now been racing the earlier model of this car, and has chosen this event is launch the Eve 8.

Making its race debut will be the Citroen Saxo in the capable hands of Sheran Fernando. This car has been making waves by breaking records both at Mahagastota and Radella Hill Climbs a few weeks ago. These two cars are excellent examples of professionally prepared race cars, very capable of delivering podium results.

Also expect to see at Pannala Dilantha Malagamuwa stride motor cycles, as also in his Suzuki 600 CC turbo-charged car. This car was seen out at Pannala recently and will no doubt perform well in the care of Dilantha Malagamuwa.

As far as motor cars events go, the format will be as per Round 1, with the exception of the minimum weight concept for group A cars, which was successfully rolled out by the CMSC at Mahagastota this year. Under this regulation, drivers will be permitted to lighten their vehicles up to a pre-determined weight, in order to compete at the top end of the class. With the modified and specials (Group M and S) a minimum weight will be enforced for each class.

This will ensure that cars compete evenly against each other in their class. The recently launched Mobil Autocolour Racing Team (MART) will be well represented at the event, and will no doubt build on the successes they earned over the Nuwara Eliya seasons racing. Led by Rohan de Silva, this team includes top riders and drivers from the racing circuit.

As with Round 1, it is expected that racing will start by 9 a.m. on Sunday, and will be complete by 3 p.m. that afternoon. The Pannala track offers excellent viewing from strategically placed viewing points, giving spectators the unique ability to see the majority of the circuit from the grandstands. The combination of the CMSC, the SLMCC and sponsors McFoil will no doubt ensure that an exciting day's racing is delivered.
