Sinhala Tamil Avurudu revels in Canberra

The Australia-Sri Lanka Association for the first time joined the Sinhala Cultural Association to mark the New Year by hosting a day of food fun and frolic on April 13, this year at the St Judes Primary School in Canberra. The unusual coming together of two Sri Lankan associations was further appreciated in the backdrop of the peace talks and in the spirit of cooperation and reconciliation.

Chief guests at the celebrations were Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Australia Major General Janaka Perera and Mrs. Wajira Perera. Distinguished invitees included Legislative Assembly Members Ms. Jackie Burke and Ms. Helen Cross, Chris Line, Detective Superintendent of Police and Ms. Robin Holder of the Domestic Violence Prevention Council.

Over 400 people gathered to celebrate the new year and Sri Lankans were able to partake of 'Kiribath', 'Lunu Miris', 'Kevum', 'Kokis' and other sweetmeats including yellow rice with all its culinary accessories during lunchtime. The crowd eagerly joined in to play traditional Avurudu Games like Kotta Pora and Kana Muttiya. Hisa Thel Gema was also part of the traditional activity.

Traditional Sinhala and Tamil dances were performed to further showcase the diverse and rich culture of Sri Lanka.
