CR beat Airmen 32/9

CR & FC produced an exhilarating second-half to bring down the Airmen and record a 32 points (two goals, three tries and a penalty) to 9 points (three penalties) win in their Caltex League rugger match at Longden Place yesterday.

The 'Red Shirts', although conceding a 3-6 lead at half time, got their act together on resumption and went on to plant five tries, of which two were converted to goals. Winger Haren Kaluarachchi, Varuna de Silva, M. J. Mushtaq, Shambly Nawaz and Asanga Rodrigo scored the tries while Kodagoda gave them the extra points.

The Airmen did well to restrict CR 3-6 at half-time, with their resolute tackling and take the lead but they ran short of ideas and fuel as CR's forwards and the back division combined well to rattle the Airmen with repeated forays in the second session.

The Airmen merely used their back division for defensive purposes mainly in the first half and they lacked any constructive moves to put CR under any pressure. Airman Ranjith Anthony played exceptionally well in attack and defence and his unerring place-kicking gave the Airmen all their points. He fired over three penalties which included a superb 40 yard kick just two minutes from the kick off. Referee: Aruna Jayasekera.

Today: Kandy SC will meet Old Zahirians SC at Nittawela. (R.A.)
