Flood havoc: Volunteers dig out what is left of a house in the town of Deniyaya. Flash floods and mudslides have killed 256 people while another 500 were reported missing. Meanwhile, in an unprecedented gesture, the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) sent food and clothing to victims of the weekend floods that devastated the southern heartland of the majority Sinhalese community. The Ministry of Education on Friday ordered that all schools in the Matara District be closed for an indefinite period.

Tokyo prevails upon LTTE

The Government of Japan has urged the LTTE to make its utmost efforts to reach an acceptable agreement urgently with the Government of Sri Lanka on some of the outstanding issues before the Tokyo Conference with a view to resolving other remaining issues later with fresh momentum generated at the Tokyo Conference.
