Another bout of rains in the offing

Close on the heals of last week's torrential rains that caused major floods and earthslips comes another warning from Meteorology Department of another sudden activation of the monsoon during the next two weeks. Department sources said the severity of the weather would depend on atmospheric changes such as depressions, wind flow or cyclonic winds in the region during this period.

According to Meteorologist, S.H Kariyawasam, last week's cyclone occured about 1000 kilometres away from Sri Lanka, near the Andaman Islands, although its effects were felt here as well.

The cyclonic effect, the Met department said was due to a formation of a `feeder band' (Meso Scale System), in the hill country and the Western slopes which resulted in heavy rains.

Asked as to why the Met Dept. had not issued an early warning, Meteorologist G. B. Samarasinghe said that meso scale systems are still in the research stage world over. "Only little is known about them", he said. -AN
