Armitage to attend confab

Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage has stated that he will attend the Tokyo Conference on June 9-10, and that he looks forward to discussing reconstruction and rehabilitation assistance for Sri Lanka at the conference. According to a statement by Lynn L. Cassel, acting spokeswoman US Department of State, Armitage has said the conference was important for the international community to demonstrate its solid support for the peace process and its full commitment to contribute to the reconstruction and development of all regions of the country, including the North and East, which has been devastated by nearly 20 years of conflict.

The US government has urged that the Tokyo conference be held as scheduled despite the LTTE's stated position not to participate, according to the statement from the US Department of State, the Tokyo confab offers a unique opportunity to highlight to all the people of Sri Lanka the benefits accruing from peace, and not holding the conference as scheduled would mean an irreparable loss to the people.
