Colombo wins Regatta after seven years

Colombo Rowing Club crews raced through the water smoothly and skilfully to win the Deepam Challenge Trophy after a lapse of seven years over Madras Boat Club in the 66th Madras-Colombo Regatta held at the CRC, Beira Lake yesterday. The last Colombo win came in 1996.

Colombo collected 26 points, winning the 'B' Pairs, 'B' Sculls, 'A' pairs and 'B' Fours, while Madras took the 'A' Sculls and the most important 'A' Four Boat Race - 16 points.

The Colombo Rowing Club oarsmen showed superiority over their opponents, in all races except the two events - 'A' sculls and 'A' fours Madras Roat Club won the Ladies Pairs, Ladies Sculls and Ladies Fours, making it a clean seven in the Ladies events. But the eromy of it was that no points were awarded for the Ladies events.

In the Veterans Fours, Colombo Rowing Club oarsmen proved their class and experience to beat the Madras Boat Club by one length.

Madras Boat Club who won Colombo-Madras Regatta in 1999 did well to beat the Colombo Rowing Club in the main event - 'Boat Race' ('A' Fours). It was indeed a close tussle at the finish.

The Madras crew comprising of B. Dushyanth (B), G. Vishwakarthik (2), C. E. Palaniappan (3) R. Siram (S) and Rietesh Gopinath (C) rowed perfectly to outrow the Colombo crew consisting of Udesh Hettiarachchi (B) Devaka Senviratne (2), Usman Fatharally (3), Diluk Aluwihare (S) Sharen Kannangara (C). Madras won the fours by just half a length, between bow and stroke. 3.04 secs to 3.05 secs Nirupam Sen, the High Commissioner of India and Mrs. Grazyna Sen were the chief guests.

Ladies Fours Vasavi Sundaram (B), Gowri Adappa (S), Sneha Vaudevan (2), Urvashi Venkat (3), Shwetha Ravi (C) of Madras Boat Club beat Venya de Silva (B), Dihara Abhayaratne (S), Umadanthi Dias (2), Niroshani Seneviratne (3), Sayumi Jayasinghe (C) of Colombo Rowing Club easily (Time 4:20 secs).

'B' Sculls Udesh Hettiarachchi of Colombo Rowing Club beat B. Harsha of Madras Boat Club easily (Time 3:48 secs)

'A' Pairs Usman Fatharally (B), Diluk Aluwihare (S) of Colombo Rowing Club beat J. Adithya (B), K. Shanmugaraj (S) of Madras boat club by 2 lengths (Time 3:23 secs). 'A' Sculls R. Sriram of Madras Boat Club beat Heshan Henry of Colombo Rowing Club easily (Time 3:41 secs).

Ladies Pairs Urvashi Venkat (B), Gowri Adappa (S), of Madras Boat Club beat Niroshani Seneviratne (B), Niroshani Wanigasuriya (S) of Colombo Rowing Club easily (Time 4:29 secs)

Veterans Fours (500 metres) Yohan Thurainayagam (B), Hiran Dorenagama (2), Rohan Fernando (3), Varuna de Silva (S), Thusitha Cooray of Colombo Rowing Club beat M. R. Ravindra (B), Ketan Adhia (2), P. L. Chokalingam (3), M. J. Sanjay (S), G. Karthik (C) of Madras Boat Club by one length.

Ladies Sculls Swathy Sanjay of Madras Boat Club beat Niroshani Wanigasuriya of Colombo Rowing Club by two lengths (Time 4:31 secs)

'B' Fours Devanta Aluwihare (B), Prajith Perera (2), Sanjeewa Perera (3), Asiri Abhayaratne (S), Myanthi Amarasinghe (C) of Colombo Rowing Club beat K. Shanmugaraja (B), G. Karthik (2), Rohit Ravindra (3), G. Adithya (S), Kiren Kurien (C) of Madras Boat Club by one length (Time 3:09 secs)
