Tyronne Fernando to popularise cricket in Bhutan

Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando has taken the lead role in an attempt to popularise the game of cricket in the mountain kingdom of Bhutan at the request of the Prime Minister of Bhutan.

Minister Fernando accompanied by former Sri Lanka cricketers Roshan Mahanama and Jayantha Paranathala went to Bhutan last year and the Sri Lankan officials had extensive discussions with cricketers and cricket officials and other individuals who have some concern for the game there.

A report has been prepared and sent to the Prime Minister of Bhutan. The report includes a number of recommendations for the development of technical skills of players, coaches and umpires.

Of the major areas for development, playing fields for cricket, wickets and pavilions for the accommodation of spectators and the training of personnel required for the maintenance of the above have also been highlighted.

It has also been pointed out that there should be a sound tournament structure for both clubs and schools and for cricket to catch on, it has been suggested that the introduction of softball cricket in schools will create interest among the schools and this in turn will mould the cricketers for the leatherball game.

Minister Tyronne Fernando distributed cricket materials, technical manuals, cassettes and CDs on coaching and Sri Lankan cricket to the Bhutanese officials, while Jayantha Paranathala and Roshan Mahanama conducted coaching sessions.
