Army register fifth win-beat Kurunegala 137/5

Army registered their fifth consecutive victory and the second ever the century mark in the current Caltex League Rugby Championship when they trounced Kurunegala RFC by 137 points (6 goals, 19 tries) to 5 (1 try) after leading 86-0 at half time at Galle Face yesterday.

They beat Old Zahirians 145-0 in their second game, and the soldiers have so far scored 417 points and conceded only 33 points. One Okaesone from Western Samoa is the latest recruit of the Army. In addition of playing at No. 8, he is the coach as well as Asanga Seneviratne their regular coach had to "give up" after being picked as a national selector.

Okasene touched down on three occasions before being injured early in the second half. Five tries were scored by centre Edwin Shimanga of Kenya who is normally a second-row forward, while the second Kenyan - Pascal Watuheka, played only for a few minutes in the second half. The soldiers scored three goals and 13 tries in the first half.

Came the second half and the soldiers managed to score only nine tries of which three were converted. Right winger Sithara Fernando, left winger Perakum Fernando, full-back T. A. Silva, centre Vajira Jayatilleke, second-rower Jayasuriya and Ganegoda did the bulk of the scoring, while Kurunegala's solitary try came mid way in the second session.

Today, CH & FC meet Kandy Youth SC at Maitland Crescent, while Navy hosts CR & FC at Welisara. Both games are scheduled to kick-off at 5 p.m.

Kandy beat Airmen 58/16

Defending champions Kandy Sports Club remained unbeaten when they beat Air Force by 58 points (5 goals, 4 tries, 1 penalty) to 16 (1 goal, 3 penalties) after leading 26-3 at half time in their Caltex League Rugby Championship game at Katunayake yesterday. (L.G.)
