Heat wave kills more than 140 in south India

HYDERABAD, India, May 24 (Reuters) - A heat wave has killed at least 143 people in southern India where temperatures hit 47.5 degrees Celsius (117.5 Fahrenheit), officials said on Saturday.

Weather officials said the high temperatures were expected to persist for at least two more days in coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh before the arrival of monsoon rains, due in the first week of June.

A heat wave killed more than 1,000 people in Andhra Pradesh last May.
