Local IT company plans overseas expansion

Computer Island Ltd (CIL), a leader in the local IT industry, celebrated its 10th anniversary this year.

The company launched its new product range, the IBM X series servers and Legato data backup and disaster recovery solutions to mark its 10th year in the industry.

It plans to expand overseas operations with branches in Australia and USA. Business processing outsourcing is on the cards while the company plans to go public before the end of this year, President and Chairman CIL Group Janaka Ratnayake told the media. CIL was started in 1993 by Ratnayake as a computer assembler. It opened a one-stop IT shop in Liberty Plaza in 1995, followed by shops at Majestic City and Kandy. Its first overseas branch was established in Male in 2000.

The company operates from its office at Kirillapona.It is the first local IT company to have both ISO 9001: 2000 and ISO 14000 standards. It was endorsed by IBM World Trade Corporation, which appointed it as a Tier One IBM Business Partner and Authorised Service Partner.

CIL's subsidiaries are Rent A Comp Services (Pvt) Ltd, an IT rental company and IT infrastructure facilities provider, ComputertCare (Pvt) Ltd, a technical assistance provider to computer users; CIL Multimedia Centre, a VCD, DVD, VHS and LD lending library; Colombo Computer School, an IT education provider; and CIL software Solutions (Pvt) Ltd, a developer of software to meet clients' needs.
