Local students for professional courses in hospitality management by Don Asoka Wijewardena The American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), which is in the process of appointing a country representative in Sri Lanka to enrol local students for professional courses in hospitality management, has offered to donate Rs. 5000 to charity for every student recruited during this period. According to AHLA executives who are in Sri Lanka, donations from recruitment during the next six weeks will be made towards the flood relief efforts. The charity programme, the officials said, will be an on-going scheme. Managing Director (AHLA), Rabind Elias Pereira based in Singapore, told the "Sunday Observer" that diplomas and degrees offered by the AHLA were highly recognised worldwide by potential employers as it had been providing courses and training materials to almost 1,400 universities, institutions and hospitality training centres. The AHLA has also been instrumental in developing the hospitality industry worldwide by assisting tourist boards of many countries and supplying required trained manpower to the hospitality industry. He added that the salient feature of the courses offered by the AHLA was that any student after completing a one-year course of study in Singapore would be able to earn while he/she learns, if he/she wished to follow a degree programme in Australia. "This is optional. We ensure that any student completing the one-year diploma course will be able to secure a good job easily but following a degree programme will definitely enhance the students' prospects of joining an internationally recognised hotel in any part of the world, "Pereira said. Consultant Training and Development (AHLA), Amir Mohamad, said that the courses designed in the hospitality industry not only covered the hotel industry but also travel and tourism, club and resort management and restaurant management from the food and beverage department to the front office. The AHLA is a 92-year-old federation of lodging association with members worldwide, representing more than 1.7 million guest rooms. It also provides courses and training materials to universities, schools and international hotels and resorts. |
