Sri Lanka to host one Indian Pro Golf tourney

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Sri Lanka will host one tournament of the Indian Professional Golf Circuit in September this year on the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) which will involve around hundred golfers.

A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) told the Sunday Observer that Tiger Sports Marketing of India who are organising the Indian Pro Circuit was in Colombo recently. He said: "Brendon D'Souza, who has been playing at the Sri Lanka Amateur Championships many years ago, held discussions with us and made many proposals. He is very keen in Colombo hosting one tournament."

India's Digraj Singh (who is a former Sri Lanka amateur champion), too is attached to Tiger Sports and they are prepared to make presentations to various establishments in Sri Lanka who are prepared to pump in the sponsorship monies involving about Rs. 5 million.

Tiger Sports Marketing are also giving the Indian Pro Circuit wide coverage on Ten Sports and ESPN - both well established TV channels, and are determined to get Sri Lanka's television, too, involved in this event.

There are 22 tournaments in the Indian Pro Circuit which includes events in Bangladesh and Nepal too, and the SLGU will rope in former SLGU President Ana Punchihewa, who was also President of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board too involved in organising this event and make use of his past experience.

The SLGU spokesman further said: "We will organise this event on a smaller scale this year, and if its successful, move the venue to the Victoria Golf Club in the Kandy district next year (2004). For Logistical purposes, Colombo, is better." Among the countries being represented on the Indian Pro Circuit are Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and even Sri Lanka who has Anura Rohana who is 70th in the order of merit in the Asian Professional Golfers Association (APGA).
