Ananda and Mahamaya overall champs

Ananda College and Mahamaya College Kandy became overall boys and girls swimming champions while Royal College and Visakha Vidyalaya emerged overall boys and girls diving champions at the three-day 27th National Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships conducted by NAASU and held at Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool yesterday.

This meet was a final trial to pick swimmers and divers to represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships to be held in Macau in August. In swimming Ananda College collected 246 points to come on top with 246 points, Royal College were second with 229 points and last year's champions S. Thomas placed third with 222 points.

Mahamaya College retained the girls overall championship with a massive margin of 413 points followed by Ladies College second with 211 points and Musaeus College third 141 points.

Royal College retained the diving overall, collecting 215 points, Asian International school coming second with 51 points and St. Joseph's College third with 17 points. Visakha Vidyalaya also retained the girls diving overall with 50 points, Bishop's College second 37 points and Anula Vidyalaya third with 12 points.

Three new meet record were established yesterday, Prabha Madavi Dharmadasa of Musaeus College in the girls 400 metres individual medley girl under 16 in 5.52.80 set the first record while Mihiri Kandanaarachchi of Mahamaya College also bettered the previous record 6.52.82 secs. Kanika Jayanga Munasinghe of Prince of Wales College accounted for the second record in the boys under-10, 50 metres freestyle - 35.61 secs and Dilini Liyanage of Ladies College lowered the girls under-18, 50 metres back stroke 35.06 secs.

There were outstanding performances in diving. Chanaka Wickremasinghe of Royal in the boys under-19 won all three events, one metre, three metres spring board and plat form diving (355.10 points, 386.10 points, 319.25 points), Esiri Kankanige also of Royal in the boys under-19 won all three events (298.40 points, 292.30 points, 223.05 points.

Prasadhi Perera of Visakha Vidyalaya took the one metre, three metre spring board diving and platform diving (209.65 points, 186.95 points, 159 points), Tharaki Siyaguna of Bishop's College finished first places in the one metre, three metre spring board and platform diving 182.00 points, 187.00 points, 129.45 points.

The young diver from Thaha Fawas Royal also performed well in the boys under-12 winning the one metre spring board, three metres spring board and platform diving - 104.45 points, 115.20 points and 78.45 points.

The champions in the respective age groups; Boys - under-10 - Shanil T. Guruge (Ananda College), under-12 Heshan Unamboowe (Trinity) under-14 - Chanaka Malambida (Ananda), under-16 - Kalyan Veera (Asian International School), under-19 - Sampath Weerakoddy (Panadura AC).

Girls under -10- Sunethra Wijeratne (Mahamaya College), under-12 - Miniruwani Samarakoon (Gateway International School Kandy), under-14 Prabha Madhawee Dharmadasa (Mahamaya College), Under-16-Mihiri Kandannarachchi (Mahamaya College), under-19 - Dilanthi Ranaweera (Mahamaya College) Sagala Ratnayake, Deputy Minister of Power and Energy was the chief guest.
