Rohan de Silva sparkles at practices

Racing 'maestro' Rohan de Silva sparkled at the official practices by clocking the fastest timing of the day at the second of the McFoil Challenge 2003 organised by the Ceylon Motor Sports Club and sponsored by McFoil at the Pannala International Racing tracks at Pannala yesterday.

The official practices to determine the grid positions produced exciting fare with the racing drivers and riders doing their best to clinch the best position for the start off today when the official races commence at 9 a.m.

Rohan de Silva driving a Mobil Auto Color Formula Ford in the event for the Formula Ford 1600 cc Standard timed 1.101 minutes which is one of the fastest recorded in this track. He was complete control of the vehicle and he should provide the fireworks today.

He rounded off fine day clocking the fasting in the event for motor cars 6.0 to 8.0 Kg/HP in his Honda. Having two pole positions in two events, Rohan de Silva should get off to a good start today.

Others to sparkle during the official practices were Simon Lawrence who timed 1.103 minutes and also Dinesh Deheragoda who timed 1.3 minutes in his UMMLL Evolution 7 but he remains the top favourite in the Super cars event having won round one comfortably on 23rd February this year.

There will be five championship events in Motor Cycles Racing upto 125 cc where Dilantha Malagamuwa has dominated. Racing mobikes upto 250 cc and Four Stroke upto 600 cc and this too has been dominated by Dilantha Malagamuwa.

The Championship event for motor cars will be Group A Standard Mini Cars upto and including 1050 cc where Rohith de Silva won last time. Group A Cars more than 12.0 and upto and including 14.0 Kg/HP with the last time winner being Ravi Mayadunne.

The last championship event will be Ford Formula cars 1600 cc, a race which will cover 10 laps or 22 kilometres and endurance and ability to last the full race will be a key factor. This race was won last time by Romani de Silva of Team Mobil Auto Color followed closely by Rohan de Silva and Dinesh Jayawardena of the same team.

In addition to this trio this event will see top drivers like Rizvi Farouk (Team Caltex), young Dejan de Zoysa - a very keen driver, Randy Batcho, Tharindu Lokuge and in the Pre 85 model there will be a big tussle between Michael Muthumani, Simon Lawrence, Romesh Paul, Nadeera Jinasena and Sampath Karunaratne.

Some of the other drivers who are expected to burn the tracks are Reyaz Varouk, Javidh Wahab, his brother Ishraw Wahab, Dhammika Peiris, Dilshard Hamddon, Dinesh Jayawardena, Sheran Fernando, Sumanapala Manapperuma, Shirendra Lawrence, Devaka Amarasuriya, Dilantha Malagamuwa, Harsha de Silva, Rizvi Farouk, Expatriate J. Johannson (Westfield), Nalin D. Perera, Dan Dissanayake, Dinesh Deheragoda, Romani de Silva, Bri Ponnambalam and many others.
