School PPA funds misappropriated? by ANJANA GAMAGE Funds collected by Past Pupils' Associations, a lucrative source of income for many schools, will come under the close scrutiny of the Ministry of Education following allegations of widespread corruption and misuse of funds, especially in Colombo schools. According to top Ministry sources, more than 50 popular schools in Colombo are allegedly maintaining two sets of PPA accounts, to collect funds that are not accounted for. Ministry sources alleged that principals in certain Colombo schools were resorting to this practice, with the specific purpose of misappropriating PPA funds, when they should actually maintain only one set of accounts. Ministry sources said that heads of all the national schools in the Western Province will be asked to submit the PPA accounts to the Ministry of Education for close scrutiny, shortly. "We have received many complaints alleging misuse of funds from PPA accounts in several leading schools in the Colombo district", said the source pointing out that schools should maintain only one set of accounts in respect of their past pupils' associations. "But we have come to know that principals of several leading schools in Colombo are maintaining two sets of accounts under the past pupils' association, with one set being handled by the respective principals", he said. The ministry, the source said, had warned schools against such practices and called for transparency in their dealings. The sources also said that the Ministry of Education would take stern action against heads of schools, who continue to maintain two sets of PPA accounts, ignoring the ministry order. |
