Int'l recognition for Sri Lanka's rural women's program by Carol Aloysius Sri Lanka's unique program for empowering rural women and youth has won international recognition and earned the island the distinction of being one of six countries with the most innovative approaches to Human Resources Development (HRD) on the Asian and Pacific region, nominated for the 2001 ESCAP HRD award. To date, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific ( ESCAP) has granted this award ten times from 1990 to 2002. The 2001 HRD award was the tenth and final one of the series. The Award, established in 1990, as a response to a call by the Jakarta Plan of Action on Human resources Development (HRD) in the ESCAP region, is given for innovative and sustainable approaches to HRD. A total of 44 nominations and applications were received for the 2001 award from both individuals and organisations in 15 different countries, including Sri Lanka, in the ESCAP region. The UN Secretariat has now published a book funded by the government of the Republic of Korea, featuring the work of the winner of the award, Lao People's Democratic Republic as well as the programs of five other nominees for the award. The Sri Lankan model cited in the publication is the Women's Development Federation (WDF) also known as the Kantha Sangaswardhena Maha Sangamaya, a rural women's organisation which operates in the Hambantota district, one of the least developed areas in the country. |
