Efficient and dedicated worker

IP Sunil Thabrew

IP Sunil Thabrew who hails from Ambalangoda, was 40 years old at the time of his death. His wife was from Kosgoda, and she is expecting their first baby. For convenience, Thabrew had been residing at his wife's place in Kosgoda.

Police sources said that Sunil Thabrew had joined the police as a Police Constable. The flair and tenacity for investigative assignments in the field of intelligence paved the path for Thabrew for quick promotions, elevating him to the rank of Inspector and then the Officer-in-Charge on Intelligence.

Meanwhile as fate would have it, his residence at Kosgoda has been broken into and thieves got away with goods amounting to Rs. 35,000.

The family had locked up the house and come to Colombo for IP Thabrew's funeral.

Police Public Relations (PPR) office reports that there had been eight killings of security forces personnel and other police informants from the time the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed last year. All of them were involved in active intelligence work. The latest victim was IP Sunil Thabrew.

Mount Lavinia's Assistant Superintendent, Wimalasena of the investigating team said that Intelligence Inspector Thabrew was an efficient and dedicated worker. He was totally involved in intelligence, especially on matters concerning the LTTE.

There had been a number of LTTE suspects taken into custody by him during his tenure of office including the arrest of a suicide bomber along with the bomb kit. This was the very first capture of a suicide bomber.

At the time of his death, Thabrew was after the suspects responsible for the bomb blast at Belekkade junction in Mount Lavinia three years ago which killed former PA minister, C.V Gooneratne and a number of others.

Thabrew's killer is now in remand and will be produced at the Mount Lavinia Courts for an identification parade on July 1.

Police high-ups surmise that the murder might have been avoided if Thabrew followed normal safety measures adopted in the normal course of duties that devolves around the policemen. In this instance, Thabrew gave the power to police informants to enter the police station without being checked.

Police had the right to question anyone who tried to enter the police station and detain them if required, police sources said.

Thabrew had treated the 'informant' as a close ally. He recalled how in the recent past, IP Thabrew reprimanded the policeman on guard duty at Dehiwala police for questioning the 'hit' man when he tried to push his way to meet Thabrew.

On that fateful day too, the suspect walked into the station, without any checks. The suspect was told that Thabrew was asleep after a strenuous night's roster. But the suspect ignored this and had walked in. According to ASP Wimalasena, no one wanted to stop the man, as they all knew he was Thabrew's man who had been acting as a police informant.

Investigations reveal that the suspect was an LTTEer. It has now come to light that he was playing a double game.

Thabrew was gunned down at point blank range by a 9mm pistol of Chinese make. Immediately after the shooting, the gunman was trying to make good his escape through the rearside of the building.

However, the police foursome headed by SI Dharmawardene gave chase in a three-wheeler, as the suspect was fleeing. The suspect was apprehended.

The suspect who was attempting to escape in a three-wheeler, was intercepted near the check point at the Dehiwala bridge.
