More Wijewardana predictions Earthquake late 2003 along SW coastal belt by ANTON NONIS Lalith Wijewardana, who has in the past predicted extra terrestrial and geological events with some success has forecast a string of natural calamities, including floods, landslides and earthquakes, for the latter part of the year. Among the latest predictions are floods in Kaduwela between August and September, an earthslip in Ginigathhena on August 23, and an earthquake between September 15 and December 30. The earthquake is predicted along the coastal belt stretching from Kotahena to Moratuwa. Wijewardana earlier predicted the meteorite strike in Nittambuwa and two earthquakes in India in 2001. However, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau dimmed Wijewardana's prediction, with Deputy Director S. M. Mudunkotuwa saying that nowhere in the world had predictions been made about earthquakes or earthslips. He also said that such predictions could not be made scientifically. However, he said that a recurrent flood could be predicted with some degree of accuracy, but not the exact time or date. Senior Physics lecturer, Chandana Jayaratne of Colombo University also dismissed Wijewardana's predictions, as 'nonsense.' Wijewardana who is involved in research of soil samples and gemmology, hails from Matara. |
