Mannar, Trinco Bishops hopeful : Peace talks will be back on track by P. Krishnaswamy The Catholic Bishops of Mannar and Trincomalee/Batticaloa dioceses Rt. Rev. Rayappu Joseph and Rt. Rev. Dr. Kingsley Swampillai have expressed hope of the peace talks between the Government and the LTTE getting back on track, once the sticking points in the peace process are resolved. The two eminent religious dignitaries who had rendered extensive humanitarian assistance to a considerable number of war-afflicted families in the North and East, observed that the Tamil people were now in the process of 'building hopes and homes' and they could not dream of a return to the war. The Bishop of Trincomalee/Batticaloa, Rt.Rev.Kingsley Swampillai, said that the present situation with regard to the ceasefire and the peace process was in a state of confusion. The conflict between the Legislature and the Executive, he said, was hampering the peace process. He said the LTTE was 'disillusioned and disappointed' over the non-implementation of provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), for which the Government should be strong enough to implement same. Rev. Swampillai said that there was, however, a glimmer of hope as both the LTTE and the Government had reaffirmed their commitment to a negotiated political settlement. The Bishop also urged the LTTE to stop killing its political opponents. |
