Suwasevana Holiday Resort : The star in Kataragama

by BEVERLEY JANSZ

Suwasevana Holiday Resort is the latest addition to the chain of hotels and resorts which is being built in Kataragama.

Many years ago, tourists, both foreign and locals who flocked to Kataragama had to restrict their stay to 'day outings' due to the lack of hotels and resorts. This has now been overcome with a chain of hotels being built at Kataragama.

Suwasevana Holiday Resort is a unique holiday resort at Kataragama which caters to the 'average tourist' both foreign and Sri Lankan. Owned and managed by the Health Department Co-operative Thrift and Credit Society Ltd the resort stands on a 50-perch land at Pussadewa Mawatha, Kataragama, overlooking the scenic 'Wedihiti Kande' (formerly known as 'Wedasiti Kanda), in close proximity to the Kataragama Devale.

The resort offers 23 guest rooms with all facilities. Some rooms are air-conditioned which are equipped with colour TV and other facilities required for the discerning traveller.

The resort has three halls and one restaurant. Suwasevana Holiday Resort Manager, Prasantha Kumara Dharmasena said that the restaurant will function very shortly but at the moment, guests are supplied delicious food from a regular supplier. He said that guests could bring their own liquor for which a corkage is not being charged.

Another unique feature is that families could cook their own food for which gas cookers etc., are supplied by the resort.

The three banquet halls with beautiful interior decor, are ideal for in-house workshops, seminars and conferences for which all facilities are being offered by the resort.

During my short stay at the resort, I found that hospitality is the keynote at Suwasevana Holiday Resort. All guests, be they foreign of local, are welcomed in a typical Sri Lankan 'Ayubowan' manner and are treated as VIPs.

Secretary, Health Department Co-operative Thrift and Credit Society Ltd G. D. Sawanadasa disclosed that the society has purchased a 40-perch block of land adjoining the resort to built more guest rooms to cater to the increasing number of tourists who flock to Kataragama, especially during the perahera season. "We are targeting the next tourist season and the August school vacations", he said.

He said that the guest rooms at Suwasevana Holiday Resort are very moderately priced to cater to the middle, and lower income earners in order to give them an opportunity to spend a pleasant holiday cum pilgrimage at Kataragama. Suwasevana Holiday Resort is owned and managed by the Health Department Co-operative Thrift and Credit Society Ltd, whose head office is situated at 37/36, Temple Road, Colombo 10. Its president is W. A. D. Wimalaratne and secretary G. D. Sawanadasa.

The society has a total of 28,000 members. They and their family members are given special discounts.
