Rock Saturday revs up
Get ready to be blitzed !

Rock fans can look forward to a steady stream - or is it a torrent - of original rock sounds of every genre in the months to come, at the monthly Rock Saturday sessions held at the 80 Club. With 25 new bands who've never been heard before already line up, Ajith Perera of Rock Company says the response has been amazing. Four of them will make their debut at the next Rock Saturday session scheduled for July 26, including Mute, Voyage and Roots of Paranoia. So get ready to be blitzed!

Meanwhile, the torrential rain that occurred suddenly couldn't douse the expectation and intensity of the crowd that thronged the 80 Club for the Rock Saturday session held on June 20, says a media release from Rock Company. Once again the event drew a stunning crowd of both sexes.

The audience fed off their very own adrenaline, bound together by their common love for the blitzing sounds of seven of the most compelling local bands. The magnified power of Stone Broke, Paranoid Earthling, Ezra, Stigmata, Cold Fusion, Independence Square and Kreb's Cycle literally shattered the serenity of the 80 Club.

The evening opened with the Gothic Rock sounds of Stone Broke who played a very impressive set including two covers and their enchanting originals. Paranoid Earthling from Kandy produced their original grunge sounds and charismatic showmanship. The feature band of the month was gospel rock band Ezra. The band played a mixture of energetic catchy rock songs, which included their recently released single 'Nazarene'. Stigmata performed next, and exceeded all expectations.

They launched into a seven song assault that cemented their place at the forefront of the Sri Lankans Rock music scene. It was worth noting that the audience liked the Stigmata originals more than the cover. It was wonderful to see the crowds chanting and head banging to original Stigmata tracks. Following that was Cold Fusion.

Tight, well executed material placed them very high among those who watched the band perform their list of originals and covers. Alternative Rock giants Independence Square took the stage to play to a pumped up crowd with their renditions of covers and originals off 'Bring Back The Sun' and 'Five and a half'. Kreb's Cycle executed their blend of Alternative/New Metal tracks portraying an efficiency and perfection.

A special milestone was laid, with Rock Company releasing a compilation featuring original tracks of ten of the best local rock bands. The compilation captures the depth and character of these bands who have struggled to stand on their own feet to develop original tracks in an industry that has done very little to nurture originality.
