'Principals' on foreign jaunts on the mat By ANJANA GAMAGE Four principals from the Southern province schools who have been found guilty of submitting false documents in order to qualify for the foreign study tour under the World Bank funded General Education Project 11. The foreign tours to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Canada and Israel were offered to school principals with 5 years experience. Over 450 principals from both national and provincial schools were selected by the Ministry for the study tours, and 396 principals have already completed the tour. A batch of 90 are still yet to proceed to Singapore as their trip was postponed due to the SARS epidemic. Investigations conducted by the Ministry of Education, into the allegations that some principals did make the tour by after submitting false documents found that four of the principals did not have the required experience. Ministry sources further said that some teachers too had submitted falsified documents to prove them as "principals". The project aimed at improving school management skills and professional development of principals was conducted at a cost of US $ 2 million. Amounts ranging from Rs. 296,000 to 500,000 was spent on each on their air tickets, food, accommodation and daily allowance. "Those who have been found guilty will be asked to reimburse the cost of their entire tour and stern disciplinary action will be take against them, the Ministry officials warned. Several groups are yet to return from their three-week study tour and the Ministry will be carry out further investigations on their return. |
