Camp massacre: bodies still at morgue

by P. Krishnaswamy

Skeletal remains of some of the victims of the Bindunuwewa rehabilitation camp massacre are still lying at the Colombo National Hospital morgue, awaiting disposal.

Hospital sources said that 'six or seven' bodies of victims sent to the hospital morgue in October 2001 in extremely charred states, were beyond recognition and hence could not be identified or claimed by parents or relatives, to perform the final religious rites.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had sent samples for DNA tests to New Delhi, so that DNA of the parents or family members could be compared to ascertain the identity. But the DNA tests, sources said, were inconclusive since the bodies were badly charred. Hospital sources said that a Court order was now necessary for disposing of the remains
