The gold find! by Karel Roberts Ratnaweera Sri Lanka is world famous for its gem reserves, but findings have also revealed that there are gold occurrences in the island. Professor C.B. Dissanayake, Senior Professor of Geology, Department of Geology, Peradeniya, told the Sunday Observer that these occurrences are found mainly in the southern sector, including Alutgama, with the Uda Walawe River Basin showing much promise as an area of gold occurrence. He said that an extensive crack from Trincomalee to Hambantota contains several minerals, including gold. This fissure runs through eleven hot springs in Trincomalee itself, and through the Uda Walawe area. Such occurrences are also reported from Anuradhapura and Seruwila.Prof. Dissanayake said that there are ancient records in the Mahavamsa of gold occurrences in the island. He also said that such occurrences refer to the Dutugemunu period which would also then include the Kotmale area where Dutugemunu spent a considerable period of time. |
