Sri Lanka to swim at Asian Age Group meet in Macao

Sri Lanka has confirmed participation at the 3rd Asian Age Group Swimming Championships 2003 sanctioned by the Asian Amateur Swimming Federation (AASF) to be held from August 24 to 30 in Macao, China.

This championships will be jointly organised by Macao Sport Development Board, Macao 4th East Asian Games Organising Committee and Macao, China Swimming Association.

The National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka (NAASU) has expressed their willingness to participate in this championships. NAASU has already sent entry by name and the events of the swimmers and divers will follow shortly. Six swimmers and four divers will compete at the championships. They were selected from the final trial - Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships held last month.

Conrad Fracis (St. Joseph's College Swimming Club), Kalyan Veera (Asian International School), Nilmi Arasecularatne (St. Joseph's College), Chathuri Abeykoon (Ladies College), Mihiri Kandanaarchchi (Mahamaya College Kandy), Prabhadavi Dharmadasa (Musaeus College) are the six swimmers selected.

The four divers are: Chanaka Wickremasinghe and Esiri Kankanage both of Royal College, Prashadi Perera (Visakha Vidyalaya), Tharaki Siyaguni (Bishop's College). Conrad will swim in 'open', Kalyan 15-17 age group and Nilmi, Chathuri, Mihiri and Prabha in the 14 years and under. Meanwhile Chanaka will dive in 19 years and above, Esiri 16-18 years, Prashadi 16-18 years and Tharaki 14-15 years.

The six swimmers and four divers names have been approved by the Sports Minister. Altogether 120 events in three age groups will be worked off in swimming-50 metres freestyle, 100 metres freestyle, 200 metres freestyle, 400 metres freestyle, 800 metres freestyle, 1500 metres freestyle, 50, 100, 200 metres breast stroke, 50, 100, 200 metres back stroke, 50, 100, 200 metres butterfly stroke, 200, 400 metres individual medley, 4x100, 4x200 metres free style relay and 4x100 metres medley relay.

The diving events are 12-13 years - one, three and five metres spring board (6 dives), 14-15 years - one, three, 5 m/7/5m, 10m spring board and platform (8 dives), 16-18 years one, three, 5m, 7/5 m/10 m (9 to 10 dives). 'Open' 19 years and above - one, three, 5m 7/5 m/10m (5 to 10 dives). The overall champion team will be declared on the total number of gold medals, if there is a 'tie' then the total number of silver and golds will be counted, a further 'tie' will bring bronze medals into the picture and still a 'tie' will bring the records too into focus.

NAASU will shortly pick a manager, swimming coach, diving coach and chaperone to accompany the ten member contingent.
