Royal dazzle - beat Isipatana 19/8

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Spearheaded by a dazzling display by fly half Varun Wijewardena Royal beat Isipatana by 19 points ( two goals and a try) to 8 (Try and a penalty) to retain the Major Milroy Fernando Memorial Trophy in a inter school rugger match played at the Royal College Sports Complex grounds yesterday.

Wijewardena's solo efforts twice in succession soon after the breather off second phase moves with Royal leading 5-0 at the half way mark made Isipatana's effort more difficult for a comeback with the score climbing upto 19 points to three.

Royal went on the offensive from the kick off and gave 'Patana' a torrid time by making daring advances and driving into rucks and mauls. Royal forwards and the back division formed a lethal combination as they were anchored in the Isipatana danger area for a considerable length of time.

Isipatana however, withstood the onslaught with a fortress like defence to keep their opponents at bay.

They did everything right within themselves but failed to impale the defence. Isipatana lacked their usual brand of play and looked a pretty ordinary outfit amidst Royal's robust and attacking style of play.

They did not indulged themselves in any moves worthwhile mentioning and at any stage did not look a winning side.

Isipatana's play maker and hooker Zenthi Kumar missed four penalties but put over one to reduce the gap.

Royal's first try came off a line out and second row forward Danushka Rajapakse drove over the line for an unconverted try.

Then came the fine piece of work by Varun Wijewardena who touched down twice almost under the post to score and make the task easier for full back Shehab Bahudeen to give them the extra points.

Isipatana had some consolation during the latter stages of the match when Nalin Liyanage went on to score an unconverted try.

Orville Fernando refereed.

The junior match ended in a five all-draw.
