World music night

A high point of the French Week held recently was the Concert at the Trans Asia, with Sri Lankan and French artistes.

Although the Concert took some time to kick off, yet when it did Pandit W. Amaradeva and his Orchestra set the mood for the evening with his compositions that are now famous internationally. Nesan's Drums Studio as it was termed leant on percussive artistry between Nesan and Ravibandu and his players.

They displayed extraordinary precision timing in drum exchanges. The soaring flute of Priyantha Dassanayake was a pleasure to listen to. With Harsha Makalande on piano the group played two interesting arrangements with extended solos of 'Lullaby of Birdland' and 'Green Dolphin Street'.

The Parisian group Minaro popular for its French World Music, kept the audience in a toe-tapping mood - their music full of verve and vitality. Their combination of instruments (accordion, guitar, trumpet and double bass) and the music reflected Moroccan influences that were infections in rhythm.
