Only 12 soldiers killed after truce

The high death toll among the armed force personnel has reduced appreciably since the signing of the MoU, with only 12 deaths reported for the past 18 months. More than 10,000 men from the three forces were killed during the previous six years of war.

At last week's parliamentary debate on the 'Security Situation in the Country' it was revealed that only four soldiers and eight members of the Army Intelligence Unit had been killed by the LTTE since the ceasefire came into effect. It was also revealed that 11 civilians had been killed by the LTTE during this period.

However, during the six years from 1995 to 2001, the death toll among the forces were - 978 soldiers, 236 Navy and 183 Air Force personnel. More than 28,000 were also disabled during this period, and more than 3,000 were reported missing in action.
