Chaminda appointed captain of Sri Lanka basketball team

Chaminda de Alwis, Assistant Sales Manager, Union Assurance, was appointed captain of the Sri Lanka national basketball team, by the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation.

Chaminda is presently touring India, where he is playing in the ABC Middle Asia Zone Qualifying Tournament in New Delhi and will play in the 45th India South Zone & Sri Lanka Basketball Championship to be held in Pondicherry from 18 to 23 July.

UAL is sponsoring his Indian tour. Chaminda also participated in the 43rd and 44th India South Zone & Sri Lanka Basketball Championship held over the two preceding years. He participated in his first Asian tour to Hong Kong for the Under 23 Basketball Championship in 1993 and was selected to the national basketball team in 1999.

An old boy of St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa, Chaminda played for his school as well as for the Sri Lanka Schools and captained the Western Province team. He presently plays for the Moratuwa Basketball Club".
