Thuhashini qualifies for US Amateur C'ships A former Sri Lanka amateur women's golf champions, Thuhashini Selvaratnam, who qualified to play in the US Public Links Championship with a gross 69, lost her second-round tussle in the match-play format, at the Ocean Hammock Golf Course in Florida. There were 144 competitors and in the qualifying round to chose the best 64, Thuhashini was 17th, but going into the match-play she lost in the second-round. The tournament was won by 13-year-old Ms Wei from Florida. Thuhashini was also a medallist winner with a gross 72 to qualify for the US Amateur Womens Championship which will be worked off from August 4 to 9 at the Philadelphia Country Club, Pennsylvania. She was adjudged "Player of the Year" of Arizona State both last year (2002) and 2001 as well, after winning the Arizona State Amateur Championship for the third year and representing the State against Utah State in 2002. The previous year (2001), Thuhashini qualified to play in the US Amateur Championship in Kansas. Thuhashini also won the Arizona Women's Golf Association's State Stroke-Play Championship at Tonto Verde Golf Club in Scottsdale in 2000 when she also qualified to play in both the British Open Amateur Championship in Surrey as well as the US Amateur Championship in Portland, Oregon. Presently, the Operations Manager of the Arizona State Golf Association, Thuhashini had a splendid season in 1999-2000 when she won eight national titles within nine months. They were the Sri Lanka amateur for the third time, Singapore amateur with a new course record of gross 66, Hong Kong Open Amateur, China Open Amateur, Thailand Open Amateur, Philippine Open Amateur, All-India Open Amateur in Bangalore and the Emirates Open Amateur with a new course record of gross 68. During the same season, she was runner-up at the Malaysian Open Amateur with a gross 66, but won the Epson Sourjana Open in Malaysia. Then she won the RCGC Ladies Championship for the sixth time, while winning the Sri Lanka Stroke-Play title for the third time in Nuwara Eliya. (L.G.) |
