Sidewalk spectacle! : The busy sidewalks of Pettah, home to the itinerant vendor and his melange of goods that range from the exotic to the bromidic, don’t often offer relief for maladies of the mind, body or soul. But in a ‘back to the future’ sort of time warp, medicine men of a time past, with their esoteric range of oils and herbs and mysterious potions, have made an appearance on the crowded sidewalk, offering a cure for everything from a broken heart to a balding pate. Have ailment, we’ll treat... seem to be their refrain, as discovered by our photographer Saman Mendis.

The Tamil Taskforce set up by Scotland Yard recently to fight escalating violence and crime among Sri Lankan Tamil gangs here nabbed a group last Thursday (July 24) said to be behind a cleverly organised 6 million pounds sterling (Rs. 600 million) credit card fraud.

Police identify human smuggling kingpins

Police investigating the racket in the smuggling of people to Italy and other European destinations have identified the local kingpins and passed on all information regarding them to the Katunayake Airport to prevent them from escaping.
