Tremendous response for liquid milk delivery programme by Hiran H. Senewiratne The town-based milk delivery system launched by Milco (Private) Limited (MPL) as part of the Government's move towards promoting liquid milk for the domestic market has received a tremendous response, prompting MPL to consider introducing more mobile units soon. MPL has currently deployed 10 mobile units with freezers and bottle cooling compartments in Colombo and the suburbs to serve customers. "Introducing this programme through three-wheelers converted into mobile parlours have resulted in sales increasing by 20 per cent," said MPL Chairman Brigadier R.P. Liyanage. He said the pilot project carried out in Colombo, Jayawadanagama, Soysapura flats, Maharagama and Maligawatta flats, has received a tremendous response. They are now in the process of implementing the project in Kandy and Galle. According to Brig Liyanage, the company intends to have about 100 mobile parlours by next year in areas covering Gampaha, Kalutara and Matara as well. MPL is also negotiating with the Minister of Samurdhi on employing Samurdhi recipients in the dairy-related industries, where they have the potential to grow, Brig Liyanage added. Sri Lanka is a dumping ground for foreign milk powder producers. Eight billion rupees worth of foreign currency is spent by the country annually to import milk powder. This money can be retained by promoting the local dairy industry, he said. |
