Celestial fire

Sel lipi by Gotabhaya

Swasthi Shree ! Thus says his sacred Majesty, the gracious Great King, glorious Chakravarthi, King of the Kings of Maya, Pihiti and Ruhuna, Mahoora of the Vanniala-aeththo and ruler of all lands from Yapapatuna to Sampanthota:

From the earliest times the belief has prevailed that, at the end of the kaliyugaya, the god Eeshvara will begin his pralaya, his cosmic dance of destruction. He will generate a celestial fire that will shine for a hundred celestial years, heating up the world, to be followed by heavy rains and howling winds and then the long silent night that comes before the next kalpaya.

There has been much dissent amongst the pundits whether this cosmic dance has begun or not, whether or not in fact the world is feeling the heat of the celestial flame. The pundits associated with Pandhura, the chakravarthi of Amerikaawa, and the vessapathis of thel deny furiously that Eeshvara's anger at the actions of humankind has been kindled.

On the other hand, the pundits who follow the green path point to what has been happening in the parangi countries these days and say that the desecration of the earth by men has caused the father of Ganadheviyo to take his first steps.

It has come to the notice of the Maha Wasala that these days the parangi mahadhweepa is sweltering in the unprecedented heaty vapours. It is said that 37 people have died because of this celestial heat. Fires in the forests of Pratikalaya, Espagnnya, Thaliyaana and Puransaya have sent people fleeing for their lives. In Alemaanya or Jeramaaniya, the very roadways have bent because of the other worldly heat, in one place swelling to two riyan in height. The mighty rivers of that continent, like the Danyoobaya, have exposed their beds and sunken wrecks of boats. The lakes have become full of green sevala and in Khroatiyaava huge numbers of fish have died. In Brithaanya animals have been taken to places where there is snow, so that they can keep cool.

It is hoped that these phenomena will waken the chakravarthis of the parangi countries to the fact that Eeshvara's ire might have been awakened by the iniquitous acts of men towards the ruk dhevathas, the deities of the trees and the dhevathas that dwell in the rivers and in the air. It is to be hoped further that pressure will be brought upon Pandhura and the vessapathis of the magical thel to curb their destruction and desecration of the dwellings of these spirits. There is, of course one reason for hope on our part that some action will come out of these events.

Traditionally the parangis, when faced with impending disaster or doom, have taken solace in worship of the god Kama, the deity of sensual pleasure. However, now even that gateway appears to have been blocked to them. Physicians in Ostriyaawa have warned that passionate exercise in the heat generated by the celestial flame may be fatal for the weak-hearted. They have warned people to refrain from excessive transports of sensual delight and to find their pleasures in a more gentle fashion, only in the cool of the night time.

The parangis will, of course, be incensed by this need to exercise the third precept in such an extreme fashion.

They will find it to be especially galling, since the physicians have found that kamic desire is increased by the heat in a quarter of all men and women. It is to be hoped that they will be driven by their passion to prevent the vessapathis from polluting the homes of the aforesaid dhevathas in future, that their desire will quench the celestial fire.

Swasthi Shree !This rock edict is made on this day of Ravi of the month of Nikini of the year of the Saka Era 1930.
