Crime round-up

Due to intensified police action during the past few weeks several hardened criminals have been flushed out from hiding and arrested from many parts of the country. The police were successful in recovering a cache of arms along with several arrests which could shed light on general unsolved criminal cases, the Interior Minister John Amaratunga said at a media briefing in Colombo last week.

Colombo's DIG Bodi Liyanage said that during the past two weeks there was one murder and a robbery of a jewellery shop reported from Kollupitiya.

The suspects have been identified and steps will be taken to arrest them soon.

The robbery had occurred after the businessman returned to his boutique after prayers. Three persons overpowered him had robbed him. Several policemen in mufti have been detailed for surveillance work. The policemen will keep an eye on criminals on the streets, he said. Referring to special operations conducted in Colombo he said 1649 persons had been arrested. Of this 91 have been remanded by courts. There are warrants against 160 others. Western Province South DIG, K.P. Pathirana said that suspects involved in the heist of Rs. 2.2 million from Seylan Bank at Wijerama Mawatha Nugegoda have been identified and police teams are searching for them. Of the 2149 persons arrested, 62 were involved in serious crime.

A person who had burgled several houses in Maharagama, Homagama, Athurugiriya and Nugegoda, Ratmalana areas have been arrested along with the stolen property worth Rs. 3 million.

Meanwhile the Mount Lavinia police arrested last week 187 Bangladeshi, 7 Indian and 7 Pakistani nationals who were to leave to Western Europe by boat illegally. Western Province (North) DIG, Pathmasiri Liyanage said that they have arrested 16 service deserters including an underworld figure with a cache of arms including revolvers, pistols and guns.

Colombo Crime Bureau's (CCB) Senior Supdt. of Police Sarath Lugoda said that a special team has been assigned to arrest the main suspect who ordered the killing of father Abba Costa.

On a tip off received several plain clothes policemen and police women were rushed to Wennappuwa in a vehicle to arrest the suspects who allegedly had stabbed Father Abba Costa to death. Two years ago the suspects had left Negombo and were hiding at a house in Wennappuwa. The police team having proceed to Wennappuwa, parked their vehicle at the house of the suspects and pretended the vehicle had broken down. When the three suspects came to help them they were arrested and brought to Colombo, Lugoda said.
