Tissamaharama resort : The flagship of Hotel Corp.

by BEVERLEY JANSZ

Tissamaharama Resort, the flagship of the Ceylon Hotels Corporation, is beautifully located by the Tissa Wewa, an ancient reservoir built 2300 years ago by King Kawantissa.

The resort has been fully refurbished in line with the vision of Ceylon Hotels Corporation Chairman Bodhisiri Ranasinghe to upgrade all CHC hotels and rest houses which are built in the most scenic locations in Sri Lanka.

The resort has 60 rooms, including 25 which are air conditioned, and three family suites overlooking the scenic Tissa Wewa in Tissamaharama. All rooms offer modern facilities such as telephone, piped music, hot/cold water and room service.

The resort has two restaurants which offer culinary delights, Western, Eastern and spicy Sri Lanka cuisine in line with Bodhi Ranasinghe's new CHC concept, 'Gedera Wage Kema Velak, Thamangema Navathanak' - 'Typical home food at your own holiday spot.' The restaurants are so located that guests get a panoramic view of the Tissa Wewa while dining.

The sacred city of Kataragama, 'Bisokotuwa' a small tank used by Queen Vihara Maha Devi, the wife of King Kawantissa, for bathing, the Yalatissa Library, where 2300 year old monuments are displayed and the 'Situlpauwa' an ancient 2300-year old temple are some of the tourist attractions in close proximity to Tissamaharama Resort.

The main tourist attractions the resort offers are the sacred city of the world renowned Kataragama, the Yala Wild Life sanctuary and the five old reservoirs, namely Panegamu Wewa, Weerawila, Deberawewa, Tissa Wewa and Yodawewa.

The resort has a beautiful and large swimming pool, including a kiddies pool, overlooking the Tissa Wewa. The well stocked bar also overlooking the Wewa, provides an informal relaxed atmosphere. The resort offers boat safaris and island hopping in the nearby island. For wild life enthusiasts, the Yala Bundala Safari, Kumana and Weerawila bird sanctuaries which are in close proximity to the resort, are major attractions.

Hospitality, seems to be the theme at Tissamaharama Resort which is reflected in the staff, from Manager, P.A.P.S. Ariyakumara right down to the room boy. "We are working round the clock to pursue the goals and objectives of CHC Chairman, Bodhisiri Ranasinghe, to upgrade all CHC hotels and rest houses to star class locations, Senior Manager, Marketing, Ceylon Hotels Corporation, Ranjith Balasuriya said.

Entering Tissamaharama the bed in the Southern Province for its historical beauty and wildlife, the Tissamaharama Resort is the ideal place to relax and experience the warmest hospitality in this ancient city.

Tissamaharama Resort is owned and managed by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation.

The Elephant Corridor commands highest room rate in Sri Lanka

More than justifying the dream of Sri Lanka's tourism of the next generation, the Chairman of Sansasuma Developments (Pvt) Ltd. Prasanna W. Jayewardene and Managing Director Susanne Filippin had a belief in Sri Lanka as a special destination when they conceptualized an upmarket luxury, life style hotel on their Sigiriya property more than four years ago.

"The Elephant Corridor" hotel in its sixth month of operation, after its soft opening, has broken all conceivable records by selling at a US $ 1,000.00 room rate a day, which no-one has dared to associate with Sri Lanka's tourism.

The journalists, tour operators, travel agents and officials who have given unstinted support to the hotel, as well as the staff and sales team deserve all credit, a Sanasuma Development (Pvt) Ltd. spokesman from their Colombo, Rosmead Place office said and also confirmed that Sanasuma Developments (Pvt) Ltd. were well on their way to build a dozen similar hotels planned in strategic locations in Sri Lanka. Four new properties will be finalized before the end of this year. Completion of all twelve hotels is targeted for December 2006.
