PERISCOPE : Day dreams

Mango friends

The Ministering angel for the Interior Long John, paid a flying visit to the northern reaches famed for its mangoes last Sunday along with John the Earl and a VIP retinue. Some of the rags had reported that the Tribe would have nothing to do with Long John, but the 'ground' condition when the chopper landed was far from that. Questions the Tribal members did have, so did the Big Easwaran, the angle for Hindu, Religious Affairs, who hosted Long John and the crew.

The trip did produce interesting feedback apart from the lobster and crab fare which the crew relished! Some of the basic issues were the fishing rights of northern fishermen who are facing a threat to their livelihood due to the present High Security Zones and their shifting. The Mango friends also told Long John that they need their Temples and Kovils repaired before their homes. It appears their world revolves around their temples than their homes. The Jaffna man believes in food for thought than food for his stomach.

Schools are high on their agenda, so are roads which are badly in need of repairs.

It is travesty that the Tribe wants to build a runway in the Wanni, invariably to serve their military ends while what the people want most are schools and better roads and places of worship with facilities for worshippers who flock for prayer and solace. Surely this is not asking too much!

Run Away

The Tribesmen have always wanted to take to the air and flyaway! Alas this was not to be, soon after their plans were literally shot down in 1998. Hope, my friends, as I reminded sometime back, springs eternal in the Tribesmen's breast. There are birdmen among them who had been trained by eagles in Europe and are bound to land in the Wanni to train some of the others, who wish to be airborne. 'Lite' aircraft may be hard to come by, but the Tribe is on the collection round for building a runway in the heart of the Wanni. Alas! sympathy for the common man seems to be scarce these days on both sides of the divide. Readiness to land at economic targets in the City? The biggest poser is, are the eagles going to land?

Tribesmen are also masquerading as fishermen in Trawlers belonging to the Vadamarachchi Fishermen and are building partnerships with them to do some other type of running-gun running!! Where does all this lead to? You may wonder! One thing is for sure the Tribe is in no mood to vacate camps already established in GCA (Government Controlled Areas), The one at Korangu panchankulam is carefully planned to displace the Muslims who had been living on the periphery of this land where the camp is, from being a threat to tribesmen, armed it is presumed, moving from the North to East.

Bilingual or Trilingual?

The intelligence wing of the Tribe is also onto evening classes for their cadres in English and Sinhala so that they can mix with the hoi polloi of the City and be taken for granted! Hope the accent does not give them away.

The Tribe has also invited Archaeological experts who can doctor the artifacts which are unearthed in the North as exclusive remnants of the Dravidian Heritage, no dispute that they belong to other communities except the monolithic Hindhu/Tamil culture. An Archaeological Centre has been opened for this purpose. Another episode in the adventures of dravidian Jones! Long Live the Tribe!

Seeing Black and white!

The 'Rathu Sahodharayas' converged on Borella, the bastion of the Mohamed who is going to develop our province, a few days back to march to the Norsmen's abode, who it was alleged are double agents, Eric the Viking and Borg who comes from the west included. The 'Rathu Sahodarayas' had hoped to marshal a gathering of 20,000 for the hartal, as elaborate arrangements and advance publicity was on for quite some time. What they got was not even half this number, with the 75 Yellow robed Sahodharayas joining in. Placards and banners were strangely All black! Instead of the customary red! They were marching in protest at the conspiracy to divide the country, by the UNF Government and the 'White Tigers' from snowcapped lands are aiding and abetting in the process. Day dreams of the 'sahodharayas' are never ending, MoU or not.....
