Mathusan - OBSERVER-BATA Schoolboy Cricketer of North

by A. C. DE SILVA

Kokuvil Hindu College's emerging star batsman Chandranathan Mathusan is the Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Northern Province. He was picked by a panel of judges of the Jaffna Schools Cricket Association and the runner-up is last year's Northern Province Schoolboy Cricketer of the year - Pathmanathan Lavendra of St. John's Jaffna.

With peace having been restored in the North the stars from Jaffna will be at the big show in Colombo at the BMICJH on August 29 for which there are 12 days more.

For Mathusan, it has been a very productive first season for Kokuvil Hindu as he was among the runs, scoring 738 runs in 12 innings hitting four centuries and two half centuries for an eye-catching average of 67.09.

He has been quite an useful bowler too, taking 13 wickets for 146 runs in the 40 overs that he has bowled during the season. As a fielder, he has taken 13 catches in helping his team to dismiss the opponents.

Mathusan came into the scene as a under 15 player in 1999 and after captaining the team in that age group the next year, played for the Jaffna District team and was also a member of the North-East Provincial team. He then graduated to the under 17 team and captaining the team last year, he was picked for the Jaffna District team too.

Having played his first season for the under 19 team this year, Mathusan has a good chance of captaining Kokuvil Hindu College next year.

Pathmanathan Lavendra too has graduated to the first eleven team of St. John's Jaffna after having captained the under 15 team, under 17 team and has been a regular member of the under 19 team since 2000 and was picked as the Best Batsman and St. John's Cricketer of the Year that year and repeated his success the following year, winning the two awards again. He was the top scorer in the 'Big Match' getting 75 runs and won an award there too.

Last year, Lavendra captained the St. John's Jaffna team and won the award for the Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Cricketer of the Year for his fine performances and he crowned his glory by being picked Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Northern Province. This year too, Lavendra has been a success and was picked as the Best Batsman and Cricketer of the Year at St. John's for the third year in succession.
