Fine Rugby... Havies beat Army 64/48

by LAL GUNASEKERA

Havelocks moved into the first semi-final of the Caltex Clifford Cup Rugby Championship where they are now billed to play the defending champions Kandy Sports Club on Saturday August 23 at Nittawela, with some of the finest rugby seen this season, defeating Army by 64 points (7 goals, 3 tries) to 48 (4 goals, 4 tries) after leading 42-24 at half time at Longden Place yesterday in a quarter-final match.

It was a game where both sides used brute strength to dominate play and Havies kept on the pressure right to the end to triumph. However, there were a few ugly scenes. The Samoan centre of Havelocks, Joseph Waqa, was sent into "Sin Bin" for the second occasion this season. Yesterday, he was caught using his boot on a fallen Udayakumar.

In the first-round game against CR during the Caltex League too, Waqa was sent into "Sin Bin". Yesterday, even on his return in the second session, he was again reprimanded by the referee.

The Kenyan centre Watakeha opened scoring for the Army with a sweeping run on the right flank in the second minute with Colin Rodrigo putting the finishing touches. T. A. Silva fluffed the conversion (Army 5-0). Four minutes later there was a "pushover" try by the Havelocks and with Prasad Perera converting, they led 7-5. Again the Havies scored three minutes later. Waqa smothered T. A. Silva clearance to score mid right and Prasad Perera obliged with the kick. (Havelocks 14-5). Army's right winger Vajira Jayatilleke then made a foolish "chip" inside the "40" which Havelocks left winger Lalindra Rodrigo collected to go under the posts (Havelocks 21-5). This was in the 11th minute.

Then it was the turn of Havelocks No. 8 Taka the Samoan, to score off a five-metre scrum in the 18th minute and again Prasad Perera kicked correctly (Havelocks 28-5). Four minutes later, Waqa, scored his second try for Havelocks after collecting an inside pass and again Prasad Perera made the conversion (Havelocks 35-5). Army reduced the lead in the 31st minute through Karunaratne and Silva added the extra points (Army 12-35).

Three minutes later, Raka, bulldozed his way through over 30 metres to score and Prasad Perera made certain of his sixth conversion (Havelocks 42-12). Army reduced the lead further through a try by centre Watukeha - his second, after Kapila Knowlten had hit the gap. T. A. Silva converted (Army 19-42). They scored again just before "lemons" by Watukeha and with T. A. Silva converting had reduced the lead further (Army 24-42).

After the turn around, Watukeha, again scored for Army under the posts and T. A. Silva obliged with the conversion (Army 31-42). This was in the second minute and 11 minutes later Taka put Havelocks all further ahead off a five-metre scrum but Prasad Perera for once failed with the conversion (Havelocks 47-31). T. A. Silva put the finishing touches to a move started by Watukeha and converted himself (Army 38-47).

Four minutes later Havelocks went further ahead. Alex Nishantha made a 'cip" for right winger Lakala Perera to score, but Hilmy Saheed failed with the conversion (Havelocks 52-38). Then Army scored through scrum-half Naufar Rahim in the 24th minute, but Silva missed the conversion (Army 43-52).

Waqa scored his third try for Havelocks in the 25th minute after smothering another kick and this time Alex Nishantha obliged with the conversion (Havelocks 59-43). Two minutes later Army reduced the lead through a try by right winger Vajira Jayatilleke and kick fluffed by T. A. Silva (Army 48-59). Havelocks put the issue beyond doubt through an unconverted try by prop Hassan (Havelocks 64-48). Dilroy Fernando fefereed.
